History
West Byfleet Golf Club was formed in 1922, but the course was originally laid down in 1906. The land was then owned by Mr Hugh Locke King whose other extensive holdings included the famous 'Brooklands' race track. The members, who were all local residents, took the opportunity to purchase the course in 1922 and changed the name from Bleakdown to West Byfleet Golf Club, thereby exhibiting both outstanding foresight and taste. The original course was designed by Cuthbert Butchart, a much respected professional of his time, whose projects included West Hill and Highgate.
Recent research has revealed that a major redesign was undertaken in 1922 by the celebrated course architect, John Abercromby, who also designed Worplesdon, The Addington, Coombe Hill, Bovey Castle and Knole Park. The comparatively few alterations that have been made to the design since then have been carried out by other notable architects such as Arthur Croome, James Braid, John Morrison (a partner of Harry Colt) and, most recently, Mackenzie & Ebert.
